Symptoms of TMJD

TMJD CAN BE DIFFICULT TO DIAGNOSE

TMJD can be difficult to diagnose because many symptoms of the disorder are like symptoms of other medical conditions, like sinusitis, ear infections, and toothaches. Symptoms also vary widely from patient to patient. These two factors often lead to misdiagnosis, failed treatments, and pain for the patient.

Common symptoms of TMJD include:

  • Clicking and popping of the jaw

  • Inability to fully open your mouth

  • Soreness and pain around the jaw and cheeks

  • Headaches, neck aches, and migraines

  • Pain in the upper back and shoulders

  • Misalignment of your bite

  • Excessive tooth wear

  • Bruxism (tooth grinding), particularly during sleep

  • Difficulty chewing or pain when chewing

  • Frequently biting your tongue or the inside of your cheek

  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)

  • Ear pain

  • Sore teeth

  • Feeling off balance or dizzy

  • Locking of the jaw

Any of these symptoms or some of these symptoms in

combination may indicate the start of TMJD. Symptoms may be

chronic or develop suddenly, and pain may be dull or sharp.

Many patients are unaware that these symptoms are symptoms

of TMJD, and self-treat their pain with over the counter pain

relievers, anti-inflammatories or NSAIDs, and other self-care

treatments like ice bags or chewing soft foods.

If left untreated, TMJD can cause chronic pain, limited ability to

move the jaw, loss of the ability to move the jaw, damage to

tooth enamel, tooth loss, and other serious complications. These complications can seriously impact a patient’s quality of life, ability to eat, and ability to talk.

Patients who suffer from TMJD can slow the progress of their disorder, or reverse its damaging effects, with treatment from a qualified neuromuscular dentist, like Dr.Samanta uses realignment techniques to move the bite back into its natural and relaxed position. Once the bite is corrected, tense jaw muscles will relax.

With many dental conditions, early intervention is critical for effective treatment of the disorder.
